La Alcaldia|City Hall

This is the biggest plaza in the city and in it was located the customhouse where all the commerce came into the city. Today this building is used as the Mayor's office.

El Portal de los Dulces

To this plaza opens the Puerta del Reloj. Near the Casa de la Aduana, here was here the slave commerce took place. The nearby buildings have columns with arches that make the plaza beautiful and give shade to the adjacent sidewalks. On this so called portals (Portal de los Dulces). are sold the best homemade sweets in town.

El Muelle de los Pegasos

At this pier minor boats transporting merchandise or passengers dock. The touristic pier is located there.

El Palacio de la Inquisicion

In September of 1610 was installed the Inquisition of Cartagena de Indias. Its jurisdiction included the Reign of Nueva Granada and Venezuela, up to Nicaragua, Panama, Santo Domingo and the Barlovento Islands. The Court of Punishments of the Saint Office had its seat here. This building is considered one of the typical houses of civil architecture of the Cartagena de Indias of the XVIIIth century. Inside were distributed jails, and torture chambers. The inquisition had as objective to judge the crimes against the christian faith and never recognized innocents.

Las Murallas

The walls were conceived with the purpose of protecting Cartagena de Indias from the continuous attacks it suffered. The construction was done in several stages, starting in 1586 with the italian engineer Bautista Antonelli, at the service of the Spanish Crown. Then in 1608 Cristobal de Roda would fortify most of the city next to open sea.

La India Catalina

Companion of Don Pedro de Heredia in his colonizing campaign, the India Catalina is immortalized in this beautiful statue which has become a symbol of Cartagena de Indias. Her image is used as the prize of the International Movie and Television Festival.

El Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas

It is the biggest Spanish fort in the New World. Originally constructed in 1536, and enlarged according to the needs until 1657. In the beginning it was called Castillo de San Lázaro. Among its parts stand out: the main entrance, the weapons plaza, a watchtower, the residence of the spaniard, the kitchen, a Santa Bárbara, the artillery tent, a water tender, several underground galleries, artillery emplacements and some gunpowder stores.

Los Zapatos Viejos

Located on the back of the Castillo de San Felipe, it is an homage to one of the greatest poets of the city; Luis Carlos López
